typical of the standard locomotive construction used in themines a few years ago. The frame was made of heavy iron castingswhich broke very readily in collisions, rarticularly in the light-er machines where the relative proportions of the weight of theelectrical and mechanical equipment was high, and it was necessaryto economize in the weight of the frame in order to prevent ex-cessive weight of the locomotive. This particular type of locomo-tive was equipped with two molors taking 220 volts, and at fullload capable of hauling the trip 6 miles per hour. The draw-barpull was 1260 lbs. and at starting 2000 lbs. At first they weredesigned to weigh 8000 lbs. but on account of not being able tobuild the frames strong enough to withstand rough mine usage, itwas necessary to increase the total weight of the locomotive to9500 lbs. In case of collision, the frames of this type of loco-motive always broke over the pedestals as this, as may be readilyperceived, is the weakest point in the frame.
