Before the time ofEdward i., however, these simple works had been converted into a castle HOUSES IN ELGIN 87 FOURTH PERIOD of the First Period, which crowned the Lady Hill, and in which he lodgedwhen he visited the district in 1296. A keep seems to have been addedat a later date, when the castle became the residence of the Earls of Moray,which it continued to be till the fall of the Douglases in the middle of thefifteenth century. But all that now remains of the structure is a few frag-ments of wall, too firmly cemented with run lime to permit of their beingcarried ofi as building materials.
