Retratado de busto, su rostro, de rasgos recios y angulosos, parece representar unos veinte años. De abundante cabellera, cejas pobladas, bigote y perilla, viste levita, chaleco y corbata de lazo, fijando su mirada en el espectador. El retrato es obra muy interesante de la producción juvenil de Raimundo de Madrazo, en el que se acerca al realismo franco y directo de la retratística francesa de ese momento, utilizando una factura amplia y deshecha, de empaste enérgico y gran efecto pictórico, visible sobre todo en el diseño de los ropajes, concentrando toda su atención en el vigoroso modelado de la cabeza de su modelo, bañada por un violento claroscuro que ensombrece su lado izquierdo, dentro de un lenguaje plástico que se transformará profundamente en su producción madura.
