Summary
[edit]DescriptionEl Nile Street, Giza, GG, EGY (46986438425).jpg | This Belle Époque villa, located in an affluent area of Giza, is an example of a type of housing commonly found in sections of Greater Cairo that were inhabited by wealthy elites in the late 19th Century and early 20th Century. Constructed in a variety of eclectic architectural styles popular in the Middle East and Europe at the time, the buildings were built as residents of the wealthy upper classes who sought to escape the crowded medieval city and move to places that allowed more space, with many houses surrounded by gardens. The houses today have been encroached upon by several decades by mid-rise and high-rise modern developments around them, as the population of Cairo has grown from 2 million to 20 million following the nation gaining full independence in 1952, and the increased population has put development pressure on formerly less populated areas of the city and surrounding region. |
