Description
English: Commemoration Day for Fallen German Soldiers. Wreath Laying at Ekeberg
  • General Hans-Jürgen Stumpff laid a memorial wreath at the honor monument with the German imperial eagle at the war cemetery at Ekeberg in en:Oslol, Norway during World War II on Sunday, March 16, 1941, on the annual "Commemoration Day for the Fallen" (German: Heldengedenktag, "Hero Remembrance Day"). The Luftwaffe general was flanked by two soldiers from the Luftwaffe.
  • Der Ehrenfriedhof Ekeberg, the German military "honor cemetery", was established with terraces, stairs, and a 1.3 meters tall bronze relief of the eagle-and-swastika of Nazi Germany, in 1940. In 1953, 2956 graves were moved to Alfaset.
  • During the commemoration in the early spring of 1941, the following attended:
    • Hans-Jürgen Stumpff (1889–1968), Generaloberst of the Luftwaffe
    • Karl Kitzinger (1886–1962), General der Flieger in Luftwaffe
    • Willi Harmjanz (1893–1983), General der Flieger der Luftwaffe

    • Karl Spanaus, the Nazi party's "local leader" in Oslo (Landeskreisleiter der NSDAP in Norwegen), later Landesgruppenleiter
    • August Edler von Meyszner (or Meissner, 1886–1947), police general (Generalmajor) in the Ordnungspolizei in Norway from November 1940 to mid-January 1942, working with HSSPF Nord, SS-Obergruppenführer Wilhelm Rediess)
    • Heinrich Fehlis (1906–1945), commander in the Sicherheitspolizei and Sicherheitsdienst in Norway
    • Herbert Bormann, Generalarbeitsführer in the Reich Labour Service (RAD), sent to German-occupied Norway in 1940 to help build NS Arbeidstjeneste, a Norwegian labor service. As Höherer RAD-Führer, he was subordinate to the German armed forces in Norway during the war.

  • The Norwegian News Agency's coverage of the event in some Norwegian Nazi controlled news papers the following Monday:
A solemn ceremony at the honor cemetery. The German people's commemoration day for their fallen was celebrated with a solemn ceremony at the honor cemetery at Ekeberg. All branches of the armed forces - the army, navy, air force, SS, and police - were represented by honor companies. On behalf of the armed forces, Generaloberst Stumpff laid a wreath in memory of the fallen. General Meissner laid a wreath on behalf of the Reichskommissar. The N.S.D.A.P. likewise honored the fallen soldiers with a wreath laid by Landeskreisleiter Spannaus. One of the army's military orchestras played Lied vom guten Kameraden at the honor monument, from the top of which the German Reich war flag waved. Many and high-ranking guests from the armed forces, Reichskommissariat, and N.S.D.A.P. attended the ceremony.

  • Stumpff (1889–1968) var general i det tyske flyvåpenet Luftwaffe under krigen og sjef for Luftflotte 5 i det tyskeokkuperte Norge fra mai 1940 til november 1943. Der Ehrenfriedhof Ekeberg, den tyske militære «æreskirkegården» (heltekirkegården), ble anlagt med terasser og trapp i 1940. I 1953 ble 2956 graver flyttet til Alfaset. Bronserelieffet av Hitler-Tysklands hakekorsørn var 1,3 meter høyt.

General Meissner nedla en krans på vegne av Reichskommissar. N. S. D. A. P. æret likeledes de døde soldater med en krans som blev nedlagt av landeskreisleiter Spannaus. Et av hærens militærorkestre spilte Lied vom guten Kameraden ved æresminnesmerket fra hvis topp det tyske rikes krigsflagg vaiet. Til høitideligheten hadde mange og høie gjester fra forsvarsmakten, Reichskommissariat og N. S. D. A. P. innfunnet sig.
