Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Either side of the tree
To the right of the tree the Douglas Water winds along its wide valley towards confluence with the River Clyde a few miles south of Lanark. To the left of tree and curving more gently along the east side of the valley is the empty solum of the former Caledonian Railway's branch from Lanark to Muirkirk, Ayrshire. The river has been there since time immemorial and will almost certainly still be flowing after Man has wiped himself off the Earth. In contrast to the permanence of Nature, Man opened the railway line in 1864 and another man destroyed it just 100 years later. This view is near Sandilands farm and between the former Ponfeigh and Sandilands stations.
