ir ears, as through an interpreter we delivered theGospel message. So far we had seen nothing of the chief. We inquired forhim, and were told that he was coming in a short time to payhis respects to us. He was blind, we were told, and would beglad if the doctor could do anything for him. After waiting aquarter of an hour, the poor man made his appearance. He wasled into the midst by a youth who was said to be his son, abright, intelligent boy. A REVIEW OF THE SITUATION 226 and not only I, but all my people, will be taught. After somefurther conversation it was decided that the operation shouldtake place on the following day ; and we left the island feelingthat an impression had been made, and looking forward to afurther opportunity of pressing the claim of the Gospel on thechief and his followers on the morrow. Alas ! we little realized the power of the evil one, and theinfluence of the medicine men of the island. Nine oclock, thehour appointed, came, and no chief—nor were any canoes visibleon the glittering surface of the Lake. Ten oclock—eleven—and noon came, and still no chief, and then came a messengerto say that he was unwell and unable to come. It was, how-ever, as we found out later, only an excuse, and that he was reallydeterred from coming by the all-powerful influence of the witchdoctors. However, the day of blessing for that lone island ofthe Lake, although not yet, was nearer than we in our dis-appointment
