uare is a fine fountain called the Fountain of Neptune, andin the portico along side of it are some magnificent statues,Michael Angelos David, Perseus, with the Medusas Head, and the Rape of the Sabines, and after that to the Museumwhere there is a good collection of bronzes and ancient armorand weapons. The only thing worth remembering is, I be-lieve, a fine bronze of Mercury represented in motion. I takemore interest in the churches than anything else and theyare remarkably fine here. In the Church of Santa Croce are buried almost all the 47 EIGHT JOURNEYS ABROAD Florentines of distinction. Here are the tombs of MichaelAngelo and Dante, Machiavelli, Galileo, Michele, Nobili, Lami, and Bruni, This church is alluded to by Byron in the 4th cantoof Childe Harold. It is very large and gloomy, as most Catholicchurches are, and they were conducting Vesper service while wewere looking at the tombs. The combined effect of the musicand associations connected with the place I shall never forget.

Till-: >;()()>: hour. fldrINi: In the church of San Lorenzo in front of the high altar isthe testimonial presented to Cosmo di Medici, with thewords Pater Patriae. In one of the side chapels.is the tombof Lorenzo di Medici executed by Michael Angelo. The finestpart of the church is the Medicean chapel, built in circularform with a magnificent dome and lighted only by a few win-dows way up in the dome. In this are the tombs of the restof the Medici family. The walls are one solid mass of themost elegant mosaic in costly marbles you can imagine, evenprecious stones are used in the ornamentation. 48 ITALY But of all things the Duomo or great cathedral pleases memost. The exterior, which is 500 ft. long, is covered with blocksof black and white marbles arranged in patterns, and in the in-terior, which is quite plain, the light is always like subduedmoonlight, and the echoes of the organ tones are wonderful. We ascended to the dome, and from the balcony, which is builtjust at the foot
