We were conducted by some of the town notables to the Estrade and there saw the Marquise who made us sit on the front row beside her. On the opposite side were Horace Porter, our Aiinister, and Count Rochambeau and a distinguished Admiral of the French Navy and some Generals, &c. -^64 FRANCE There were military bands and choirs of singers from Parisand decorations galore. They begged us to 365 EIGHT JOURNEYS ABROAD come after the ceremony of unveiling to the Chateau, where alunch was to be served,—flowers put on the tomb ot theMarquis I knew, &c., but we knew it would be impossible forus to stay in that hotel over night, so there was nothing todo but to come back. Some Americans went down in the train with us but ofcourse didnt know who we were,—a Col. Huntington, andCol. Chaille Long, &c., who were most polite after they foundout who we were and saw us sitting with the Marquise. Iwas disappointed to give up going to the Chateau, but betweenthe heat and fatigue had to let it go.
