, with most gorgeous trees, sycamores, and a tree I donot know but seems like a cross between a beech and an oak.A beautiful parasol pine hung over one corner and wonderfulfountains with very ancient looking balustrades and statuesand basins or troughs, flow down the centre from far back tothe very gate, near which a fountain of four figures life-sizebronze held up the Delle Rovere coat of arms. We saw oneof the family crossing the Park and I have since learned itwas Miss Allen of St. Louis, who married the Duke di Lante, but I had forgotten about it. We came back to the hotel and had tea and saw two Eng-lish women who seemed the only foreigners there, though the 557 EIGHT JOURNEYS ABROAD proprietor said there had been five American automobilesthere at lunch time. We did not meet them so they musthave gone on. Anyway the beds were clean and we slept well and thismorning the sun was bright and warm. After breakfast I 558 ITALY went at once to the Cathedral and found it had not been over-estimated. In the first place the location is so wonderful, onthe highest part of this already tremendously high town, out-lined against the mountains with the valley of the Pagliabetween. The whole front is of white marble and gold mosaic, the glitter of which almost blinds one in the sunlight. Onewould never tire of looking at it but I cannot give a detaileddescription of it, so lace-like is the carving. THE CATHEDRAL AT ORVIETO I went inside and found
