Une église était mentionnée comme ancienne au début du 11e siècle, et avait été restaurée vers 1040 - 1050 par Yves de Saint-Berthevin. Vers 1073 elle est donnée aux bénédictines du Ronceray d'Angers qui en font le siège d'un prieuré. L'édifice est, dès lors, à la fois prioral et paroissial. Les religieuses sont à l'origine de sa reconstruction dans la seconde moitié du 12e siècle. Les premières travées de la nef, partiellement détruites par les anglais en 1429, ne sont reprises qu'en 1478. La flèche a été réalisée par le maître maçon Jamet Nepveu de 1534 à 1538. En mauvaise état, elle a été reconstruite à l'identique par l'architecte Lambert entre 1874 et 1876. Les deux premières travées de la nef ainsi que la façade sont reconstruites, de 1883 à 1887, par les architectes E. Lambert et Eugène-Joseph Hawke.
