Summary
[edit]DescriptionEffigy Mound of a Turtle, Rockford Illinois.jpg |
English: Effigy mounds were built in the shapes of animals. The original purpose of the effigy mounds is not known. Ilinois once had 33 known effigy mounds. As of 2011, four remained in the state. The others had been destroyed over time. The one pictured here is in Beattie Park in Rockford Illinois. Beattie Park is the only public land in this state where all three kinds of mounds, conical, linear, and effigy mounds, sit side by side for public view. The Beattie effigy is in the shape of a turtle. The land for the park was donated to the Rockford Illinois Park district in 1920 by Anna and Mary Beattie. They specified in their donation that the mounds and the native trees be preserved. (42-16-27 N/89-05-39W/719 feet). |
