Title |
Eearly Medieval buckle |
||
Description |
English: A complete copper alloy zoomorphic D shaped buckle frame, of Early Medieval dating (AD 1000 to AD 1100).
The object has a D-shaped frame which is oval in cross-section. The buckle loop is enlarged and tapers towards the strap bar which is off-set and narrowed. The outer face of the buckle frame has been decorated with a series of thin grooves (either straight or diagonal, respecting the shape of the loop). These are divided in the centre by a rectangular notch for the pin to rest measuring 3.85mm in width. Each end of the buckle frame is decorated with a stylised animal (dog or dolphin) head which grip the axis bar between their jaws. The strap bar is rectangular in cross section, thinning at the central point. It measures 3.07mm in width and 2.31mm in thickness. The pin which remains attached to the strap bar consists of a single strip of copper alloy which has been bent around the strap bar forming a loop. The tip of the pin is missing. The rear of the object is smooth and undecorated. The buckle has a smooth mid-brown patina however has been 'glazed' or waxed by the finder. Several similar buckles have been recorded on the PAS database including: HESH-913D85, LVPL-AAE215, YORYM-023A40, and KENT-A88102. They have all been attributed to the Late Anglo-Saxon period (1000-1100 AD). |
