Summary
[edit]DescriptionEdwin M. Husted House, Buffalo, New York - 20210718.jpg |
English: The Edwin M. Husted House, 288 Jersey Street, Buffalo, New York, July 2021. One of two adjacent houses on Jersey Street designed the same year (1886) by the Buffalo-based architectural firm of Swan & Falkner, the Husted House differs from its counterpart in presenting a much purer iteration of the Queen Anne style during the early years of its popularity. Most interesting are the cross gables that characterize the roof, faced in decorative asphalt shingles and wherein windowless projecting portions at the top contrast with recessed bay windows at the base. Elsewhere it's a rather spartan affair, with flat-arched second-story windows overlooking a balcony that forms the roof of an asymmetrically oriented front porch. The house was built for Edwin S. Husted (1828-1886), a dealer in hay, straw, and oats who operated a stall in the Elk Street Market, but he died shortly after moving in. Afterward, ownership passed to his son Edwin M. (1863-1926), who gave up his presidency of the East Hamburgh Canning Company to continue the family business (initially along with his widowed mother Edith). The younger Edwin continued lived in the house until 1902. |
