Ex-Mayor Shimer Dead. A Well Known Citizen Passed Away Yesterday Morning. Mayor From 1884 TO 1886. One of the Most Popular Chief Executives that City Ever Had. For Many Year He Was One of the Leading Merchants. Hon. Edward S. Shimer died at quarter of 4 o'clock yesterday morning after an illness of a little over two weeks of enlargement of the prostatic glands. Mr. Shimer was stricken with congestive chill two weeks ago last Sunday and his condition became critical. Tuesday morning last he fell into a coma, which ended in death. Since the death of his wife, in 1893. Mr. Shimer had made his home with his son-in-law. Dr. J. D. Christman, of No. 124 North Sixth street. The funeral will take place on Saturday after noon. Sketch Of His Life. Edward S. Shimer was born in Shimerville, Lehigh county, on July 13, 1832, and was the third child of Charles B. Shimer and his wife, Anna Schantz Shimer, of Whitehall township. The pioneer of the Shimer family in this county was Daniel Shimer, who emigrated from Germany in the middle part of the eighteenth century. Among his sons was Adam Shimer, whose son. Jacob, was the great-grand father of the ex-Mayor. He settled in Upper Milford township, Lehigh county. Among his sons was John Shimer, who was born in the old homestead and was a farmer and Justice of the peace. His wife was Sally Van Buaklrk and they had ten children, among whom was Charles B. Shimer, the father of the subject of this sketch. Charles B. Shimer cultivated the old farm and was the father of ten children, eight eons and two daughters. Edward S., the third child, was instructed in the rudiments of the English language In the schools of his native township and later he took a course in a seminary at Stewardsville, New Jersey. For several years after he was clerk In stores at Kmaua. Shimersville and Macungle and thus began his business career. He became a resident of Allentown at the age of seventeen years and lived here up to the time of his death, being for many years a respected and esteemed citizen. His first place of employment In Allentown was in the dry goods store of H. Guth & Co., with which he was connected for three years. Then he entered the employ of Grim & Reninger and after five years' service as clerk he became a member of the firm. At the end of two years one of the partners, the late Ephraim Grim, retired and the name of the firm was changed to Reninger Shimer and later to E. S. Shimer & Co. Their place of business! was on Hamilton street, next door to the old Eagle Hotel. Mr. Shimer continued a member of the firm for a period of twenty-eight years and In 18? he established a oar-pet store on Hamilton street between Sixth and Seventh, from which he retired about eight years ago. Since often he has been in the insurance business. Earlier In life Mr. Shimer was a director of the Millerstown Bank and Millerstown Iron Company (now Macungle). He was also a director of the .Allen Mutual Fire Insurance Company and a member of the Board of Trade. He was for nearly a quarter of a century a member of the Board of Trustees of Muhlenberg College and took an absorbing Interest in the welfare or the institution and Its students. Mr. Shimer was also connected from boy. hood with St. John's Lutheran Church and was for many years a member of the consistory. He was a member of Allen Lodge, No. 71, I. O. O. F. Mr. Shimer As Mayor. In the winter of 1884 Mr. Shimer was nominated by the Republicans for Mayor of the city and he was elected by a majority of 284. He assumed his duties in April of that year and served a term of two years. His administration was conducted in a clean and businesslike manner and Is regarded bf having been one of the best in the history of the city. Mayor Shimer took a great pride" in his official force, which was a model of neatness and efficiency. ... brightest spots in his long and useful career. Mr. Shimer always took an active Interest in politics and In 1894 he was the Republican candidate for State Senator, being defeated by only a few votes. He was also honored upon a number of other occasions by his party. Mr. Shimer was married on October 31, 1853, to Ann Catharine, daughter ol Charles and Julia Kramer, of this city, who preceded him In death ten years ago. Two children, Edgar C. Shimer and Mrs. Alice Christman, wife of Dr. J. D. Christman, both of this city, survive, besides these brothers: Hiram 3 and Alexander S. Shimer, of this city. and Llewellyn S. Shimer, of Shimersvllle. Four rothers and two sister preceded him in death.
