Myra Albert Wiggins, Edge of the Cliff, 1902, Platinum Print, 8.1 in x 6 in, Location of the photo is not stated, but is most likely on the California coastline. This photo was sold in an auction by artnet.com in 2002. Using the immense landscape we saw in the survey era of photography, Wiggins shows a mother and a daughter walking along the edge of a cliff in her pictorial photograph appropriately titled Edge of the Cliff. We see the mother and daughter both wearing gowns and bonnets, suggesting their connection with the pioneer women from whom Wiggins was a descendant. The daughter walks on the outer edge of the cliff, with her head down and concentrating intensely on the task of walking, while the mother holds her hand and watches over protectively. The cliff is sharply in focus in the foreground, but blurs in the background showing the uncertain length of this walk. Only a tiny sliver of the ocean is shown in the uppermost right hand corner. This scene demonstrates possibly the rite of passage for the young girl, as she must learn to walk on the edge of danger and ahead into the unknown with caution, but with confidence. |
