By this time nearly all the dogsexcept Old Troupe and Flounce had abandoned thechase, and as Old Spot drew near to where we werestanding Alfred called upon the owners of the otherdogs, who had talked so loudly about their prowess, to call out their dogs of high-sounding names and royallineage and let them join Old Troupe and Flounce andbe in at the death. And these gentlemen did rallytheir dogs, who once more joined in the chase, butthey soon tired and returned to camp. Old Spot, withTroupe and Flounce close behind him, circled near usseveral times, and each time the rest of the severalpacks would join in the chase, only to soon return inapparent disgust. At theclosing hours of the chase all but about half a dozendoofs had retired from the contest, and these few wereso far behind Old Troupe and Flounce as to clearlyshow they were outclassed. The owners of thesemuch-touted dogs were honest in their belief thattheir dogs were great, and able to catch any fox thatwore fur, but the contest to which they were invitedwas essentially different from any in which they hadever participated and Old Spot was a differen
