Summary
[edit]DescriptionEckard II and his wife Uta.jpg |
English: These sculptures , located in the Western choir of the Cathedral, became world famous. They amaze the viewer with their realism and clearly expressed individual features, which was completely unusual at that time, since the figures were made 150-200 years after the death of the persons they depict. No biographies of these persons have survived, and the tombstones, which could be used, do not give any information about the appearance of resting under them, because in the middle ages portrait similarity was considered completely optional.
All sculptural groups of the Cathedral are created in the same style, which indicates that they are created by the same talented and very prolific master. His works are easily identified by the specific manner of performance in the sculptures of Strasbourg, Metz, Reims, Amiens and Mainz, from where he arrived in Naumburg through merzeburg. His last works are, apparently, seven statues of the Cathedral in maysen. Sculptures of the Cathedral in Naumburg are among the most significant works of early German Gothic. Apparently, the unknown master was the first who decided to give to the sculptures of lines of portrait similarity to the person used as model. It was a huge step forward.
