CHAPTER I WORLD HISTORY AND THE WORLD MISSION The part that the world-wide enterprise of Christianmissions is playing in moulding the history of the worldis already a large one, and is destined to increase moreand more. This interlacing of world-history and the world-mission is a phenomenon which, as was lately wellsaid by one in highest position, will increasinglycompel the study of the statesman and all whokeep watch on the course of the world. But ithas also another aspect. If missions help to makehistory, world-history also reacts on the world-mission,deflecting the currents of its effort, giving definiteness toits ideals, causing modifications in its methods. Justbecause it is a mission that seeks to save the world, it isnecessarily sensitive to the occurrences of the world.And when there occurs one of those rare events which,like an earthquake-shock, affects every political seismo-graph all over the earth, it follows, with equal inevitable-ness, that the whole enterprise of the
