| Description |
English: Eccles Wastewater Treatment Works. Slow sand filters condition the water here at this facility on the north bank of the Manchester Ship Canal at Barton upon Irwell.
The wastewater is sprayed from a rotating arm onto a bed of graded sand and gravel. The water slowly drains through this bed under gravity. Harmful micro-organisms in the waste are digested by bacteria that grow naturally in biofilms that develop in the sand. |
