Summary

[edit]
Description

Ebor Cottage, is next to Ebor House...Middleton Road

Ebor House was built in the early 18th century and was situated off Middleton Road. It was occupied by the Fenton family and became a place for Roman Catholics to worship in private when open practise of Catholicism was forbidden. Henry VIII outlawed Catholicism during his reign yet it wasn't until the 1778 Catholic Relief Bill that the followers could practise their faith without fear of fines or imprisonment. Ebor House was used for this purpose from around 1755 until 1787. There was no Catholic church in Middleton, however, until St Philip's Church was built in 1936-7.
