Summary

[edit]
Description

The ebony jewelwing is a the only dark broad-winged damsefly in North America. They are large (11/2-21/4 inches) or (40-60mm). They hang out in shady areas near streams. They flutter around like butterflies and perch mostly on leaves. When they land they signal to the opposite sex by fluttering thier wings open and shut. If you are patient you can capture this display ritual. They most commonly do this shortly after landing. Watch them do this then set up to try to capture the open wing display (see below).

Jewelwings rarely venture into sunlight but will enjoy a few rays from time to time. In direct sunlight their colors can better be appreciated. The female has bluish legs and body with some fluorescence on her thorax. She also sports a white spot on each of her four wings. The male has darker and spotless wings. His body has more of a green metallic color. Where you find one you ususally find the other. I have not witnessed the males squarring off for territorial displays but they are reportedly very territorial.
