Summary
[edit]DescriptionEbbing and Flowing Well, Buck Haw Brow B6480, Giggleswick - geograph.org.uk - 925879.jpg |
English: Ebbing and Flowing Well, Buck Haw Brow B6480, Giggleswick. The water of this celebrated well periodically ebbs and flows, at times brimming over to run across the road. The frequency varied with the weather from five minutes to several hours. It is listed as one of the 'Holy' wells of Yorkshire. Since certain people dug out the well some years ago, in order to find out the reason for its ebb and flow, the rhythm of this phenomenon has almost ceased, even though the fabric of the well was supposedly replaced exactly as it was before. This accords with a 19C explanation that there was a stone in the underground watercourse that acted as a valve, blocking the flow until sufficient head of water had built up to rotate the stone and open the passage. The excavation might have dislodged the stone so that the flow is always unimpeded. Certainly there was a constant sound of running water on the left side of the well. See 925871 for a closer view, and 338482 for the surrounding area of hillside. |
