On le qualifie en général, et trop rapidement, de symboliste mais son goût de l’étrange s’oppose au courant littéraire et artistique de son époque. Il est surtout connu pour ses surprenants cycles gravés comme le montre le fonds du musée, composé de 144 œuvres. Il réalise ainsi de 1878 à 1915 quatorze suites à l'eau-forte, qui sont ses œuvres les plus remarquables. Ces étonnants ensembles tirent leur force d’expression de la gravure qui constitue, selon lui, un véritable moyen d’expression moderne et l’authentique organe de l’imagination.
