Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Eastman Machine Company building, 779 Washington Street at Goodell Street, Buffalo, New York, October 2021. This sprawling, two-story edifice was constructed in 1908 and has an interesting architectural design that marries the guiding principles of the "Daylight Factory" school of industrial architecture (namely steel-reinforced concrete construction, ample fenestration, open floor plan) with Romanesque Revival decorative elements (namely the handsome arched corbelling above the second-floor windows). The Eastman Machine Company was founded in 1888 by Canadian inventor George Eastman, whose innovative platform-mounted fractional electric motor was the operative component of the fabric-cutting machine that was his namesake company's principal stock in trade. By the inauguration of the building depicted here, the business had been bought out by former employee Charles P. Stevenson, who died later that year and was replaced at the helm by his son Wade. Under Wade's leadership, the company's rapid expansion would lead it to enter international markets in Europe, Latin America, and South Africa with what was now a growing range of products. Eastman Machine remains headquartered in the building.
