Eastbay Men Get Citations. Awards to Bay area men in the armed forces were announced today by the War and Navy Departments, in a list topped with the name of Capt. Paul A. Conger, fighter pilot from Piedmont Captain Conner uwuj the Purple Heart, Distinguished njmg v-ross ana two clusters, and Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, has been awarded the distinguished Service Cross, second highest American award of honor, for "extraordinary heroism in action against me enemy on December 11 1943." Observing a large number of rocket-carrying enemy planes escorted by fighters. Captain Conger led his flight in a vicious attack against the enemy formation, during which he destroyed one enemy-plane and damaged another. He immediately attacked them, following the JU-88 to an extremely low altitude and destroying it. Christensen, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Christensen of 345 62nd Street, Oakland, for gallantry while on a bombing mission over-Germany April 13. "Lieutenant Christensen's aircraft was subject to intense attacks by enemy fighters," the citation reads. "The main entrance door was shot off, a large hole was torn in the horizontal stabilizer, the elevator and rudder trim-tab controls, severed and the rear oxygen systems were shot out. Although the ship was vibrating. Lieutenant Christensen maintained control and made the bombing run with good results. Due to lack of oxygen some of the crew members passed out on the return trip, but Lieutenant Christensen gave auxiliary bottles to those men, and despite many difficulties returned his damaged aircraft to a safe landing at his home base. Christensen already wears the Air Medal and an Oak Leaf Cluster Jot his participation in combat missions over Europe. He was commissioned last June. Prior to enlistment he was employed by the Richmond Lumber Company, and formerly attended Armstrong College in Berkeley. Silver Star Medal. Ward of Antioch for "gallantry and intrepidity in action" aboard a submarine, during a patrol on which his ship sank three enemy ships, including a destroyer, and damaged five others. Staff Sgt. Wallace H. Higginbotham, of 5681 Ocean View Drive, received his fourth Oak Leaf Cluster for "meritorious achievement" while participating in operational flight missions in the Southwest Pacific. In addition he wears the Distinguished Flying Cross. Son of Mrs. Ora Higginbotham, of the Ocean View address; he has served overseas nearly three years, and is stationed in the Southwest Pacific. He is a graduate of Oakland schools. First Lieut. Norman D. Crane, 706 Brooklyn Avenue, has been awarded an Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu nf an additional Air Medal. He is a pilot and assistant operations officer in a 13th A.A.F. B-25 medium bomber squadron, now striking at Rabaul from an advanced South Pacific base. He has been overseas since March, 1943. Good Conduct Medal From New Caledonia comes the news that PFC Ben R. Corbello, husband of Mrs. Rose Corbello and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Corhelln ot 338 Linden won the Good Conduct Medal for over a year of "exemplary behavior, efficiency and fidelity as a soldier of the U.S. Army." He is a graduate of McClymonds High School and prior to his induc- Tmris-emptoyeTrByTuTIman Company. He entered the Army in July, 1941, and was assigned In a Military Police company. In February of last year his unit was sent to New Caledonia. Another Good Conduct Medal went to Pvt. Anthony J. Atascs, whose mother, Mrs. Edna K. Atascs, lives at the Durant Hotel in Berkeley. A member of the Air Base Unit stationed at Paine Field, Everett, he was given the award after a year's continuous service.
