  • Subjects (LCSH): First Avenue (Seattle, Wash.); Squire's Opera House (Seattle, Wash.); Central business districts--Washington (State)--Seattle; Pioneer Square-Skid Road Historic District (Seattle, Wash.)

According to http://pcad.lib.washington.edu/building/15514/, the large building left of center was built Squire's Opera House 1879, converted to become the New Brunswick Hotel September 1882. Partnering with local saloon keeper-turned-wholesale liquor merchants John C. Nixon (Former proprietor of the Grotto Saloon) and Frank Algar, A.P. Hotaling incorporated his Seattle branch (A.P. Hotaling Company of Puget Sound) in November 1882, building a large wholesale warehouse on Yesler's Wharf and opening a sample room and office in the foreground building, which had been built for Nixon by Franklin Matthias in the summer of 1882. The brick McNaught, Walker & Renton Building on the left edge of the photo was also completed around November 1882. Stowell & Co. Druggists, dissolved their partnership in March 1884. Therefor, this photo was taken no earlier than November 1882 and no later than March 1884.
