[edit]DescriptionEarthworks of the original Balloch Castle - geograph.org.uk - 1047170.jpg |
English: Earthworks of the original Balloch Castle Today, Balloch Castle is the name given to a manor house built in 1808, which is shown here: 26411. However, that castle incorporates stone from a much earlier castle, which was located closer to the water's edge; its site is shown in this photograph.
The earlier castle was the seat of the Earls of Lennox from the twelfth century until 1652, at which time it passed into the ownership of Sir John Colquhoun of Luss. The photograph shows a wedge-shaped mound (it has a north-western, a south-western, and an eastern side); its top is marked out here with a dried-up stand of Rosebay Willowherb. A ditch that surrounds this mound is what remains of the castle's moat; it is best seen at the extreme right of the photo, where the ditch runs along the photographer's line of sight, following the north-western side of the mound. For a closer look at that side, see 1047188 and 1853512. The moat is shallowest and least evident on the near (the eastern) side of the mound; the foreground shows the marshy area that lies between that side, and the photographer's position. For the southern part of the eastern side of the mound, see 1853496. This site is given statutory protection under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979. |
