Summary
[edit]DescriptionEarthquake Lake (Madison County, Montana, USA) 9 (44609762320).jpg |
As the name suggests, this body of water formed after a powerful earthquake struck the southwestern Montana-northwestern Wyoming region decades ago. The Hebgen Lake Earthquake occurred at 11:37 PM on 17 August 1959. Shaking triggered a large landslide that blocked the Madison River, forming a lake that was dubbed "Earthquake Lake". Its current appearance is only semi-natural. Not long after the landslide occurred, anthropogenic excavation and rock removal occurred to restore some flow to the Madison River, which lowered lake levels. Many still-standing trees are in the lake. They were part of a riverine conifer forest before the earthquake and landslide. After six decades, the wood still has not decayed (take that young-earth creationists!). Locality: view from Route 287, southeastern Madison County, southwestern Montana, USA |
