Summary

[edit]
Description

As the name suggests, this body of water formed after a powerful earthquake struck the southwestern Montana-northwestern Wyoming region decades ago. The Hebgen Lake Earthquake occurred at 11:37 PM on 17 August 1959. Shaking triggered a large landslide that blocked the Madison River, forming a lake that was dubbed "Earthquake Lake". Its current appearance is only semi-natural. Not long after the landslide occurred, anthropogenic excavation and rock removal occurred to restore some flow to the Madison River, which lowered lake levels.

The landslide is off to the right in this photo.
