Title
Early to mid Neolithic chert side scraper
Description
English: Early to mid Neolithic side scraper on a tertiary flake of grey chert. On one mesal two notches have been removed from near the distal end then the whole ventral edge has received short, parallel to sub-parallel, semi-abrupt retouch The resultant edge probably served three purposes, as a serrated blade, a notched scraper, and as a side scraper if the proximal end was favoured. The other mesal is 7.5mm thick. On its dorsal edge it has short, abrupt, sub-parallel retouch to the whole edge. The ventral edge has a series of scaled semi-invasive removals overlaid with short, abrupt, sub-parallel retouch on its middle third while the distal third has had a large removal that runs across to the dorsal edge. This last removal has served to narrow the distal end and to create a small nub between it at the removals on the middle third. This nub has had two further spalls removed, either to allow it to be used as a robust gouge/burin or to stop it causing injury when the opposing mesal was in use. The distal end has been shaped with an invasive initial removal and has then had short sub-parallel, semi-abrupt  retouch. The distal end has also been modified, initially with a flake that removed the whole end, the the two ventral corners have been removed invasively, finally the sharper of the corners has been reduced with a fine invasive removal. Dates to between c4000 and c2700 BC.
