Title |
Early neolithic leaf shaped arrowhead |
||
Description |
English: Worked lithic, probably a leaf shaped flint arrowhead (projectile point) of early Neolithic date (3500-2900 BC). The lithic is leaf shaped with a short straight base and curved concave sides which meet at a point at the top. In cross section it is broadly lentoid. The lithic has been formed from a broad relatively thin blade, and the upper (dorsal) face has a series of longitudinal blade scars present suggesting that the blade had been removed from a relatively well worked core. The lower (ventral) face shows clear percussion waves; the bulb of percussion has been partially removed by short retouch or bulb scars. Uneven fracture on the upper (dorsal) face has resulted in a step just above the butt. Unusually for a leaf shaped arrowhead this piece has few signs of retouch with perhaps just one site by the 'point' on the upper (dorsal) face and a few sites where edges are chipped by use/damage. The lack of retouch is either because: a good initial strike meant it was not required, the arrowhead was abandoned part way through production as too small for retouching or dispite it's shape this is a late mesolithic microlith which may have been hafted as an arrow but was not retouched.
The lithic is made from a mid-grey flint with light grey patches. It measures 26.9mm length, 15.5mm width, is 3.7mm thick and weighs 1.2 grams. |
