Title |
Early medieval tweezers |
||
Description |
English: An almost complete pair of copper-alloy sheet tweezers. Through the loop of the tweezers there is a copper-alloy wire suspension loop, perhaps suggesting that these tweezers were originally part of a toiletry set, the other item(s) now lost. One of the arms of the tweezers is complete and measures 58mm in length, it is 5mm in width at the loop and flares out to 13mm in width at its terminal. Traces of decoration consisting of an incised boarder line near to the edges of the arm can be seen. The end of this arm turns in at a 90 degree angle. The other arm is incomplete due to an old break about half way down, again a decorative boarder incised line can be seen in places, although this arm is more worn and corroded than the other. Similar tweezers have been found at Ingham, Suffolk (West 1998, Fig 57, No 2). These tweezers are likely to be middle Anglo-Saxon in date due to the flaring arms and the turned in end of the complete arm (Geake 2001, 75). |
