Title |
Early medieval tweezer arm |
||
Description |
English: A copper-alloy incomplete arm of a pair of tweezers, most likely early Anglo-Saxon in date and found in the same area as a cremation group of molten brooches and other objects. This arm measures 68.49mm in length and 9.2mm in width, it is rectangular in shape and does not really taper towards its terminal end. The terminal end survives and its tip is bent backwards almost at right angles to the arm. The loop end is incomplete due to an old break. The front face of the tweezer arm is decorated with three evenly spaced incised crosses each one with a pair of transverse grooves above and below it. There is another pair of transverse grooves just before the terminal end turns under. This tweezer arm and its decoration is similar to a complete pair from Frilford, Oxfordshire which was discovered with a female inhumation burial (MacGregor and Bolick, 1993, 222, 38.14). |
