Title
Early medieval to medieval bone pin beater or thread picker
Description
English: A worked bone probable pin beater or thread picker, used to release knots and tangles during weaving. The implement is 103.1 mm long and is pointed at one end, showing evidence of being heavily used. It is smoothed and well polished. The artefact is 6.8 mm wide and 10.8 mm thick. There are two grooves, one on each side which have been produced by the thumb and forefinger of a person through prolonged use. Such aretefacts are well known from early medieval and medieval contexts and as such it is likely that this implement is Saxon or Norman in date. A similar artefact is illustrated in Ottaway and Rogers (2002, 2738; 8019).
