Title |
Early medieval sword pommel |
||
Description |
English: Copper-alloy pommel from a sword. The base of the pommel is curved and it has five curved lobes, increasing in height towards the centre. The central lobe is very much larger than the four side lobes, and has a circular perforation, 5 mm in diameter, to allow it to fit over the tang of the sword. There is some damage around the perforation and some loss of surface. The perforation then flares out to become an oval hollow; only the side lobes are completely solid. There are no rivets and the pommel was presumably held in place simply by the hammered tang. Late early-medieval pommels (Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Scandinavian) were last thoroughly studied by Petersen in 1919. This one is a Petersen L type VI pommel, a fusion of Anglo-Scandinavian and Anglo-Saxon fashions, and dates to the 10th or 11th century. |
