Title |
Early medieval strap end fragment |
||
Description |
English: Early medieval mount; fragment of cast copper alloy decorative piece, probably a mount of some description. The fragment consists of the end of a very small, narrow piece of copper alloy which is moulded with an animal head, reminiscent of Saxon strap ends of 9th century date. The head is picked out with indented dots for the eyes, an incised horizontal line above the eyes, moulded curved eyebrows and a raised ridge running vertically down the ‘snout’. This fragment is riveted onto the front of another strip of copper alloy which extends below the end of the animal head terminal, suggesting that this is not a strap end but rather a fragment of decorative mount attached to something larger. The single rivet can be seen on the reverse of the fragment. Unfortunately, the fragment is broken away at both ends, leaving a piece which is too small and undiagnostic to be closely identified.
