Title
Early medieval strap end
Description
English: A fragment of a copper alloy early medieval strap end, dating from the 11th century. It is possibly a Class E Type 1 (Winchester style) or 2 (anthropomorphic). The strap end has a split end attachment and is rectangular in shape. There are two copper alloy rivets still in situ holding the two sheets together. Below this is a rectangular border, with the strap end below decorated with openwork. In the centre there is a raised circular projections, with three circular impressions, possibly forming two eyes and a mouth. Above this are two triangular indentations, and either side is a circular hole. Either side of the central projection are two more circular holes, these are worn and broken, and no longer complete. The outer edges of these circles expand slightly towards the end, and possibly form the arms of the figure. There is no decoration on the reverse, which is flat. The strap end has a light green patina, and measures 28.2mm in length, 21.8mm in width, 4.2mm in thickness, and weighs 7.95g.

The strap end is similar to ones shown in Thomas 2004, page 3, numbers 24, and 26-27.
