Title
Early medieval strap end
Description
English: An incomplete Early Medieval copper alloy strap end of Class B Type 1, dating from c.750-1100 AD. The strap end is triangular in shape tapering towards the terminal end, and would have originally had two circular attachment holes at the wider split end. Both of these are now broken, and only the worn edge of the holes remain. The face of the strap end is decorated with incised lines; underneath the attachment end there are two curvilinear lines. Below this an incised border runs around the edge of the strap end, and along the top of the terminal end, this has incised cross hatching inside. Below this is the zoomorphic terminal, with a snout, two long oval eyes and two incised curvilinear eyes. The strap end has been distorted and no longer is flat due to the slight bend near the centre. The reverse is undecorated. The strap end has a mid green patina, The strap end measures 43.1mm in length, 10.1mm in width, 3.4mm in maximum thickness, and weighs 5.46g.
