Title
Early medieval strap end
Description
English: A fragment of a copper alloy Early Medieval strap end with a zoomorphic terminal, probably Class A Type 1 (Thomas 2003). Only the lower part survives and the central area of this is poorly preserved. It appears to have had a central rectangular panel with a rectangular border, the lower edge of which is concave. The markedly different (paler green) colour of the corrosion products in this central panel suggest that it was inlaid with silver or niello. Traces of paler corrosion products also remain in the incised decoration of the terminal. This consists of two curved lines on each side demarcating the moulded eyes on the side of the terminal, with another convex line above. The terminal is moulded to form a snout, which appears worn or broken. The reverse is flat.
