Title
Early medieval strap end; probable fragment of Winchester-style strap end
Description
English: Early medieval strap end; probable fragment of cast copper alloy strap end of late 10th or 11th century date. The strap end is influenced by the Winchester style of decoration but is a very debased form of that spreading foliate design. The current fragment is the terminal end of a long, narrow, 'tongue-shaped' strap end which comes to a point at the apex. There is a knop at the apex which has been broken and worn to a point. The strap end itself has seven holes, giving the openwork, foliate design. It is broken across a further pair of holes and then worn to a smooth, knobbly end. Length 33.4mm, width 16.2mm, thickness 3.8mm, weight 4.44g Ref: This identification is rather speculative, based on previously recorded examples such as DENO-123BB7 and NMS-1D99B4.
