Title |
Early medieval stirrup strap mount |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete copper alloy stirrup strap mount with some niello decoration, dating to the Early Medieval period, c. AD 1000-1100.
The object comprises the triangular plate of the strap mount. There are areas of decay which indicate the presence of two rivets, and possibly a third. Two rivets are placed as a pair, forming part of the heads of two beasts which d dominate its decorative scheme. The third rivet is located between the beast's extended rear paws. Two beasts are the centre of the decorative scheme, in one of which some silver niello survives. This is located between the chests and forepaws of the beasts, and the niello seems to have been designed in a triangular shape filled with tiny swirling serpent like beast designs. The forepaws and rear limbs create a further triangular cell in the centre of which was one of the rivets. This is an example of Williams Class A Type 8. It is typical of the earlier versions of this type and most closely matches Williams 137 and 138. HAMP-8439E1 is very similar, with a similar wavy serpentine pattern surviving in the niello. Measurements: 37.4mm length, 21.4mm width, 5.2mm thickness, weight 13.11g. |
