Title |
Early medieval square headed brooch fragment, front |
||
Description |
English: Fragment from an Anglo-Saxon square headed brooch. The piece is the large head of the brooch. It is cast from copper alloy and has an ornate chip carved design around the outer edges; on each side there is a depiction of a facemask. The surface was gilded although much of this has worn away. In the centre of the brooch head there is a flat, sub-square panel with a smaller decorative square within it. On the back of the brooch head there is double pin bar lug; each lug has a perforation through it but the pin bar does not survive.
The piece weighs 22.84g and measures 50.6mm in width, 34.25mm in length and 9.9mm in thickness. It dates from the late 5th century - late 6th century (450-575 AD). |
