Title
Early medieval square headed brooch
Description
English: A fragment of a copper alloy square headed brooch dating to the sixth century AD. The fragment comprises part of the foot plate and one side lobe. The foot plate is flat, with a prominent central rib terminating in a face mask, beyond which the brooch is broken. Flanking the rib are two triangular cells created from reserve metal. The cells are surrounded by bands of vertical and horizontal moulded decoration. The surviving lobe possesses a circular cell created from reserve metal. To one side of the cell is a circular panel of moulded decoration. On the underside there is a central vertical rib and a small fragment of the catchplate. The fragment measures 40mm in length, 47mm in width. It appears to be blackened in places and is slightly distorted suggesting that it has been burnt, probably in a cremation context.
