Early medieval square headed brooch
Description
English: A burnt and melted fragment of a square headed brooch dating to the sixth century AD. Although slightly heat distorted, the fragment visibly comprises a portion of the head plate and bow. The head plate is flat and square and possesses cast decoration. The decoration is enclosed within a raised double border and comprises cable moulding enclosing a further rectangular double border with square mouldings within. The underside of the head plate is plain with two semi-circular pierced lugs to hold the pin in place. The fragment measures 37mm in length and 28mm in width.
