Title
Early medieval spindle whorl
Description
English: A complete lead alloy spindle whorl of Early Medieval date, c. AD 500-1000.

The object is circular in shape and domed in cross section, with a flattened lower surface and convex upper surface. The upper surface is noticably smoothed, with this effect somewhat diminished by post depositional cracking. It is now a pale grey in colour due to patinisation. In the centre is a perforated aperture which is 6mm in diameter.

The flat lower surface and domed upper surface conform with Walton Rogers form A1, thought to be consistent with usage between AD 500 and 1000. The small size spindle hole can also be seen as diagnostic of an Early Medieval date. SWYOR-4037DD is a similar, although lighter, example.

Measurements: 24.8mm diameter, 9.1mm thickness, weight 28.3g.
