Title
Early medieval pendant; Saxon pendant of gold setting containing red shell-shaped stone
Description
English: Description: Early medieval pendant; gold saxon pendant with shaped red stone setting, probably a garnet. The pendant dates from the early-mid 7th century. The setting is of sheet gold with a beaded rim around the edge. There is a strip of gold, decorated with ridges running along its length, attached to the back of the setting and then curled forward on itself to form a suspension loop. The setting contains a semi-circular, domed, red stone, shaped with radiate ridges into a shell shape.

Discussion: This object bears a close resemblance to a gold and garnet pendant found in an Anglo-Saxon grave in the Streethouse area, Redcar and Cleveland, excavated in 2005. (Treasure Annual Report 2005/6, pg. 83). The Streethouse pendant is more elaborate, with garnet cells surrounding the central setting, but the large central stone, reminiscent of a scallop in shape, is very similar.
