Title
Early medieval mount
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy early medieval openwork mount of Urnes style dating to AD 1000-1100. The mount is in the form of a coiled serpent or dragon like animal, with the head forming the projection. The head has a long wrinkled snout with a flat circular loop containing a piece of copper alloy wire, and a raised forehead with a circular eye on either side. The detail is formed of incised lines. Behind the head the mount lowers and there are two sub circular moulded ears. This then joins the body of the animal, which is formed of intertwined loops and tendrils. The mount is asymmetrical, and has irregular circular openwork holes. It is unclear whether any of these would have held a rivet, however the central hole looks more worn. The reverse is flat and undecorated. There is a very slight curve to the mount.

It has a mid green patina, and measures 43.0mm in length, 20.8mm in width, 3.8mm in thickness and weighs 9.99g.
