Title
Early medieval lead trial piece
Description
English: A fragment of a lead striking of the dies for a penny of Cnut (1016-35), short cross type (c. AD1029-36; North 790), moneyer: uncertain, mint: London. Ref: North 1994: 168.

The fragment is torn, partially folded (this does not appear to be a deliberate act, but probably occured post deposition) and incomplete with parts of the coin design missing. The folding of the sheet has obscured much of what remains of the reverse of the coin and the moneyer's name is not visible even if it survives. The striking itself appears to be reasonably clear and complete although it is difficult to certain given the condition of the lead sheet.

Obverse: Left-facing helmeted bust, sceptre in front of face; [ ]T REX

Reverse: Short cross with large annulet centre within a plain circle; [ ]N LVN[ ]
