Title
Early medieval key
Description
English: Early medieval key; cast copper alloy key of the mid-late Saxon period, c.550-900. The key has a large, drop-shaped plate with openwork decoration. It has a central bar which branches off, giving two pointed oval voids at the top and a lozenge void at the bottom. The shaft of the key is hollow and oval in cross-section. The key bit is minimal, seemingly having only two short, flat tines, the upper of which is now missing. There is a sturdy, circular suspension loop at the top, in the perpendicular plane to the key handle.

Length 59.4mm, width 21.5mm, thickness (shaft) 6.8mm, thickness (loop) 12.3mm, weight 17.25g

Ref: "Medieval Catalogue, London Museum", pages 133-136, especially keys A 3086, A 3087, A 13482 & 30.93 (figs 1-4 on plate XXIX) Compare the key from Barham in East Anglian Archaeology’s “Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Material from Suffolk”, illustrated on page 122, figure 6.58, which is of similar shape, although less ornamental. Hinton’s “Southampton Finds volume II” also has an illustration of keys of similar shape, from the mid-Saxon period, pages 50-51, figure 21.

Mills also has similar keys, page 61, especially keys AS132 and AS133
